Privacy Policy
Effective August 11, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how Rock Identifier & Gem Scanner ("Rock Identifier & Gem Scanner," "we," "us," or "our") handles information when you use the Rock Identifier & Gem Scanner mobile application and our related website and services (together, the "Services"). It also describes the choices and rights available to you.
By using the Services, you acknowledge the practices described in this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree with this policy, please do not use the Services.
1. Information we process
Scan photos and AI requests
When you ask Rock Identifier & Gem Scanner to identify a specimen, the photo you select or capture is sent with an identification prompt to OpenRouter. OpenRouter may route the request to the AI model provider selected for the Service. The photo and generated result are processed to provide the requested identification and mineral information. Please do not submit photos containing faces, documents, precise financial information, health information, or other sensitive personal data.
Collection, history, and custom values
Scan history, collection entries, saved scan images, custom mineral prices, and app preferences are stored locally on your device. This information helps you revisit scans and organize your findings. It may also be included in device backups depending on your Apple and device backup settings.
Finding locations
With your permission, the app may access your device location so you can save where a specimen was found and display it on your collection map. You may also search for and choose a location manually. Saved finding coordinates are stored locally on your device and are not included with the photo sent for AI analysis. You can deny or revoke location access in iOS Settings.
Mineral catalog information
Rock Identifier & Gem Scanner reads mineral and featured-stone information from Supabase. If an identified mineral is missing from the shared catalog, the app may submit the generated mineral record—such as its name, classification, physical properties, estimated value, care information, and reference-image URL—to our catalog. The submitted catalog record does not include your original scan photo, custom price, or saved finding location.
Purchases and subscription status
Purchases are processed by Apple through the App Store. We use RevenueCat to provide subscription options, confirm purchase status, restore purchases, and unlock Pro features. Apple and RevenueCat may process purchase identifiers, product and transaction details, subscription status, app information, and an anonymous app-user identifier. We do not receive your full payment-card details.
Network and technical information
When the app communicates with our providers, those providers may automatically receive standard network information such as your IP address, request time, app or device information, and diagnostic data. Rock Identifier & Gem Scanner also requests public mineral text and images from Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons based on mineral names. The built-in magnetic-field detector processes sensor readings on your device and does not upload those readings through the app.
Communications
If you contact us for support or a privacy request, we process the contact details and information you provide so we can respond, investigate issues, and keep an appropriate record of the request.
2. How we use information
We use information described above to:
- identify rocks, minerals, crystals, and gemstones;
- provide mineral details, reference images, and value estimates;
- save and display your scan history, collection, and finding map;
- operate subscriptions, restore purchases, and provide Pro access;
- maintain and improve the Services, troubleshoot errors, and prevent misuse;
- respond to support and privacy requests; and
- comply with legal obligations and protect our rights and users.
3. When information is shared
We share information only as needed to operate the Services, comply with law, or protect the Services and their users. Our service providers include:
- OpenRouter and its routed AI model providers, for image-based identification and generation of mineral information;
- Supabase, for hosting and delivering the shared mineral catalog;
- RevenueCat and Apple, for subscriptions, purchase validation, entitlement status, and purchase restoration; and
- Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons, for public mineral information and reference images.
These providers process information under their own terms and privacy policies. We may also disclose information if reasonably necessary to comply with law, enforce our terms, investigate fraud or security issues, protect rights or safety, or complete a merger, financing, acquisition, or transfer of assets.
We do not sell personal information. The current version of Rock Identifier & Gem Scanner does not display third-party advertising or use personal information for cross-app behavioral advertising.
4. Data retention and deletion
Locally stored scan history, collection data, custom prices, scan images, and finding locations remain on your device until you remove them through available app controls, clear the app's data, or uninstall the app, subject to any device backups you maintain. Shared catalog records may be retained to operate and improve the mineral catalog.
Our service providers retain information according to their applicable terms, policies, and service settings. Support communications are retained only as long as reasonably necessary to respond, maintain records, resolve disputes, and meet legal obligations.
5. Your choices and rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:
- request access to or a copy of personal information we hold about you;
- request correction or deletion of that information;
- object to or restrict certain processing;
- withdraw consent where processing is based on consent;
- request data portability; and
- appeal a decision or complain to your local data-protection authority.
You can control camera, photo-library, and location permissions in iOS Settings. You can manage or cancel subscriptions in your Apple ID subscription settings. Because much of your collection data is stored only on your device, we may not possess or be able to recover it.
We do not knowingly sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising. Where applicable, you may contact us to exercise your privacy rights. We may need to verify your request before responding.
6. Security
We use reasonable administrative and technical safeguards designed to protect the information processed through the Services. No transmission, storage system, or security measure is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
7. International processing
Our providers may process information in the United States and other countries whose data-protection laws may differ from those where you live. Where required, we rely on appropriate legal mechanisms for international transfers.
8. Children’s privacy
The Services are not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided personal information through the Services, please contact us so we can investigate and take appropriate action.
9. Third-party links and services
The Services may display content or links from third parties. Their privacy practices are governed by their own policies, and this Privacy Policy does not cover services that we do not control.
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy as the Services or legal requirements change. We will post the revised policy on this page and update the effective date. If a change is material, we may provide additional notice where required.
11. Contact us
For privacy questions or requests, contact the developer using the support contact listed on Rock Identifier & Gem Scanner's official App Store product page. Please include “Privacy Request” in your message and identify the country or region where you live.
